Botox aftercare: what actually matters in the first week
Most of the advice floating around is overly cautious. Here's what's actually backed by how the treatment works.
Botox aftercare advice ranges from reasonable to borderline superstitious, and it's worth separating the two. The treatment itself is straightforward, and the actual aftercare requirements are lighter than a lot of online lists suggest.
The first four hours matter most
The most consistently recommended guidance is to stay upright and avoid lying flat, rubbing, or massaging the treated area for about four hours after injection. The concern is that pressure or movement could theoretically cause the product to migrate slightly from the intended muscle before it has fully settled. After that window, this concern largely fades.
Skip the gym for the rest of the day
Avoiding strenuous exercise on the day of treatment is a reasonable, well-supported recommendation — increased blood flow and heat can theoretically affect how the product settles. Most providers clear you for normal exercise the following day.
You don't need to avoid makeup entirely
Light makeup application is generally fine a few hours after treatment, as long as you're gentle around the injection sites and avoid heavy rubbing or pressing. If a provider tells you to avoid all makeup for a full week, that's more cautious than the actual mechanism of the treatment requires — worth asking about, not necessarily worth ignoring.
Bruising, not pain, is the main thing to watch for
Mild bruising at injection sites is common and typically resolves within a few days to a week. Significant swelling, spreading redness, or symptoms beyond the injection area are less common and worth a call to your provider, though genuinely rare with a qualified injector.
The two-week check-in is the real aftercare milestone
Full effect isn't visible until roughly the two-week mark. Most of the useful "aftercare" is really just patience — resisting the urge to judge the result at day three, when the treatment hasn't finished settling yet.
Common Questions
Quick answers.
Can I fly after Botox?+
Yes, air travel isn't typically restricted after Botox. Some providers suggest waiting a few hours before flying simply as a general precaution, but there's no strong mechanism-based reason to delay travel significantly.
When should I contact my provider after treatment?+
If you notice drooping, difficulty with normal facial movement beyond the treated area, or symptoms that seem to be spreading rather than resolving, contact your provider promptly. Mild bruising or tenderness at injection sites is normal and not a reason for concern.
